  • Topic:  The Lore Behind the Roar:  Celebrating 100 Years of the SD Zoo!
  • A San Diego History Center Presentation
  • 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the San Diego Zoo.  Created as an offshoot of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition the Zoo has grown to become the global leader in world-wide efforts to eliminate extinction.  Illustrated talk explains how an expanding global economy in the 1910s where exoticism and orientalism of the Far East played a large role in shaping personal collections.  Those collections led to knowledge seeking and scientific research to understand the natural world.  Enter Zoos as menageries of animals that are collected part for study, part curiosity and part for their whimsy and delight.  Hear the story of Dr. Harry Wegeforth; Belle Benchley; Charles Schroeder and others as the Zoo took on prominence as innovators in animal care; preservation; conservation; education and entertainment leading it to its world famous status today!
